Joseph A. and John Edwards papers, 1862-1906.

Items in this collection related to Joseph Edwards include two letters written by Joseph Edwards in May, 1899; a journal kept by Edwards between March 18, 1899 and August 15, 1899; and a Des Moines Register and Leader newspaper clipping from Sunday, August 12, 1906 titled "Life in the Philippines with the Fifty First Iowa." The collection also includes two letters written by John Edwards. One letter dated June 21, 1862 is addressed to Charles Aldrich. The second letter (January 10, 1882) is addressed to Hoyt Sherman and discusses a Constitutional Convention re-union. The relationship between John Edwards and Joseph A. Edwards has not been determined.

Joseph A. Edwards of Des Moines, Iowa served with Company A of the 51st Iowa Infantry as a part of the Philippine expeditionary forces. He mustered in on May 30, 1898 and mustered out on November 2, 1899 in San Francisco. John Edwards was born in Kentucky, moved to Indiana to escape the institution of slavery, migrated to California and in 1853 settled in Chariton, Iowa where he practiced law.
